Made in New Jersey

A Sad Farewell

Newspaper

The Daily Journal of Elizabeth was one of the oldest daily newspapers in New Jersey. Founded in 1779, and called the Elizabeth Journal for most of its existence, the newspaper chronicled the growth of its hometown from the early 19th Century through its transformation after World War II. As longtime Elizabeth residents moved to the state’s suburbs, the Journal eliminated the reference to the city in its masthead, becoming known simply as The Daily Journal. But changing times and new methods of news consumption were too big a challenge for the Journal as well as many other local newspapers in New Jersey. As a result, the Daily Journal closed in 1992. This is a copy of the paper’s final issue.
