Private lotteries were a common means of raising money during colonial times. Many essential capital projects, such as roads and canals, were financed through private lotteries, even New Jersey College, now known as Princeton University, conducted private lotteries to finance various construction projects. This ticket was for a drawing in 1763 sponsored by New Jersey College. Today’s New Jersey Lottery consists of various daily drawings, with profits designated for education and other public uses.
