Biographical Note:

The Livingston and Kean family papers consist of ledgers, correspondence, photographs, albums, receipts, account pages, and other materials that provide insight into the daily lives of the family. William Livingston was born in 1723 in Albany, New York, attended Yale College, and worked for decades as a lawyer in New York. Upon his retirement, Livingston built a country estate in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. With his wife and eight children, Livingston moved into the Georgian manor in 1774. Livingston spent the next several years serving as brigadier general in New Jersey’s militia, New Jersey’s first elected governor, and representative to the Constitutional Convention. Following Livingston’s death in 1790, his son, Henry Brockholst Livingston, sold Liberty Hall. Between 1798 and 1811, the estate passed through several families before coming into the Kean family, who would occupy the house until 1995.

The Kean family papers originated with John Kean (1755) of South Carolina, a plantation owner and the first cashier of the Bank of the United States, who married the niece of William Livingston, Susan (Livingston) [Kean] Niemcewicz. They had one son, Peter Kean. John Kean died in 1795, and Susan remarried the Polish count, Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz, an advocate for Polish independence. In 1811, Peter Kean purchased Liberty Hall on his mother’s behalf. Peter Kean was married to Sarah Sabina (Morris) [Kean] Baker and they had three children who survived to adulthood, John Kean (1814), Julia Ursin Niemcewicz Kean, who married Hamilton Fish, and Christine Kean, who married William Griffin. Peter predeceased his mother in 1828 and Susan Niemcewicz died in 1833.

John Kean (1814), Peter and Sarah Kean’s son resided at Liberty Hall for much of his life, where he raised a family with his wife, Lucnietta (Halsted) Kean and built several businesses including Central Railroad of New Jersey, Elizabethtown Gas Company, and Elizabethtown Water Company. John Kean and Lucinetta (Halsted) Kean had nine children, many who lived at Liberty Hall for their entire lives. Three of John Kean’s daughters, Lucy, Susan, and Elizabeth never married and managed the family estate, traveled, and engaged in charity work. Two of John Kean’s sons, John (1852) and Hamilton Fish Kean became prominent New Jersey politicians, serving as United States senators and members of the United States House of Representatives. Christine, a daughter of John Kean (1814) married into the Roosevelt family. Another daughter, Caroline, had a son, George Barclay Rives, who became a U.S. Ambassador.

The last generation of Keans to reside at Liberty Hall included Hamilton Fish Kean’s son, John Kean (1888), his wife Mary Alice (Barney) Kean and their three children, Mary Alice, John (1929), and Stewart. Mary Alice (Barney) Kean played a prominent role in early twentieth-century historic preservation and served on the boards of several historical organizations throughout her life. She died in 1995, and, according to her wishes, Liberty Hall Museum opened as a museum in 2000.
